SO WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MEETS ALL ABOUT?
YMCA DUAL MEET DUAL
MEETS ARE ONE DAY MEETS WITH TWO TEAMS COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER.
ALL LEVELS SWIM AND COACHES DETERMINE THE EVENT THE CHILD WILL
PARTICIPATE IN. WE TYPICALLY HAVE 6 DUAL MEETS A SEASON - 3 AT HOME AND
3 AWAY. SWIMMERS MUST COMPETE IN AT LEAST 3 TO QUALIFY FOR SENECY.
THEY USUALLY LAST ROUGHLY 4 HOURS DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE TEAMS.
SPECIALTY MEETS -
SUCH AS THE FREESTYLE FRENZY, PENTATHALON AND VARIOUS DISTANCE MEETS CAN
LAST FOR 1 OR MORE DAYS. THEY OFFER A NICE CHANGE BECAUSE THE FORMAT
IS DIFFERENT THAN A DUAL MEET. EXAMPLE - FREESTYLE FRENZY IS ALL ABOUT
FREESTYLE. EACH CHILD SWIMS ALL LENGTHS - 50, 100, ETC., AND THE
SWIMMER WITH THE LEAST AMOUNT OF CUMULATIVE TIME WINS.
USA MEETS - THESE
ARE WITHIN THE REALM OF USA SWIMMING, NOT YMCA, AND OFFER USA MEMBERS A
DIFFERENT, OFTEN MORE COMPETITIVE, LEVEL OF SWIMMING. SWIMMERS
COMPETE AS INDIVIDUALS AS OPPOSED TO DUAL MEETS WHERE WE SWIM AS A
TEAM.
SENECY MEET- SOUTH EAST NEW ENGLAND CLUSTER YMCA
THIS IS OUR LAST HURRAH FOR THE YMCA DUAL MEET SEASON. WE SWIM AGAINST
ALL THE TEAMS THAT ARE IN OUR DIVISION AT THE SENECY MEET. LAST YEAR WE
PLACED 2ND OVERALL - OUR BEST FINISH YET.
Y NATIONALS - CUT
TIMES HAVE TO BE MET TO QUALIFY FOR THIS MEET HELD IN FLORIDA FOR SHORT
COURSE SEASON, AND MARYLAND FOR LONG COURSE. SWIMMERS FROM ALL OVER THE
UNITED STATES, THAT HAVE QUALIFIED, COMPETE IN THIS MEET. LAST YEAR,
THE MAKOS SENT 4 KIDS TO SPRING NATIONALS TO REPRESENT OUT TEAM.
SHORT COURSE - THIS SEASON RUNS FROM OCTOBER TO APRIL. ALL EVENTS ARE IN LENGTHS MEASURED BY YARDS.
LONG COURSE - RUNS THROUGH THE SUMMER AND EVENTS ARE MEASURED IN METERS.
UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT SWIMMING LEVELS
Mako Swim Team is divided into
different training groups to allow swimmers to practice and learn with
athletes of similar abilities. All swimmers are exposed to stroke
technique training through practices that combine drill and stroke sets.
As swimmers show a proficiency in the skillset of their group and begin
to show the skills needed to advance, coaches will determine if
movement to the next training group is appropriate. In the more advance
groups, dryland training is added as well as discussions regarding the
importance of racing techniques and nutrition.
National Team
The national team consists of those competitors who have demonstrated a
skill level commensurate with that needed to compete at the YMCA
National Championship, USA National Championship, or Olympic Trial
levels.
Senior Team
The senior team consists of swimmers that exhibit a high level of
swimming and workout ability. These swimmers are expected to be mature,
dedicated, responsible, and
dependable. As our more advanced swimmers increase their commitment to
swimming, we insist that they maintain a good academic standing.
Junior Team
Junior swimmers are well versed in technique and strategy. They are also
a full-fledged training group. The goal of this program is to have a
skill level commensurate with USA Regional Championship and YMCA New
England time standards; as well as other time standards based upon USA
Swimming progression for athlete development. Workouts for the Junior
Team are offered five days a week and usually last one and a half hours each day.
Age Group Team
These swimmers have started to exhibit good swimming skills.
They spend their time equally between stroke technique and training
skills and processes. These swimmers are offered practices five days a
week and workouts last one hour.
Novice Team
This is a beginning competitive group with a major emphasis on stroke
technique. This group will be introduced to a few low-level
competitions. The Novice swimmers swim three times a week for one hour during the short course season.
